Mercedes-AMG ONE
After an extended amount of time, the AMG ONE is finally here.
Well, here it is. The recent speculation of Mercedes' F1 powered hypercar's death has now been brushed away with the official launch of the AMG ONE. After years of rumours, leaks and doubtful misinformation on the ONE, new photographs have been released, and boy, does it look good.
Originally revealed way back in 2017 in concept form, then named the 'Project One', is built around Lewis Hamilton's dominant Mercedes F1 powertrain system. It produces a very large 1,049 horsepower, sourced from a turbo hybrid, 1.6 litre V6 engine. 4 electric motors are located in different areas of the car; one on the turbo, one on the engine and two powering the front wheels. It comes equipped with an 8-speed semi-automatic gearbox, and thanks to the F1 base, the AMG ONE revs up to an astounding 11,000rpm. This figure leads to it being able to do 0-100 in 2.9 seconds, which is fairly disappointing considering the other, older hybrid hypercars (LaFerrari 2.4s, Porsche 918 2.6s, McLaren P1 2.8s).
The ONE can be lowered when put into Performance mode, and uses active aero. It's wide, long (475.5cm) and low and surprisingly shares the same design as the prototype we saw way back in 2017. Aerodynamic design elements such as the air outlets and active spoiler keep the AMG ONE stuck to the road and with an F1 style roof-scoop and an abundance of air-flow systems, the middle mounted engine is sure to keep cool. There are many design elements of the AMG ONE that are easily recognisable, such as the infamous AMG stripe logo as taillights, and butterfly style doors. An extravagant diffuser and centre exhaust system adds to the aerodynamical function of the ONE. The three modes, Highway, Track and Race Drag Reduction System all determine the power, grip and downforce.
The all new forged aluminium wheels feature large carbon fibre covers, that once again help to reduce drag, and are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R M01 tires, specifically designed for this car, which even feature the silhouette of the car that they belong to.
