Mazda Iconic SP

After years of piston engines, Mazda have revived the infamous rotary powertrain. Well, sort of...

Meet the Mazda Iconic SP: an all-new concept car revealed last week in Hiroshima. The SP is perfectly proportioned to engage with those who love the thrill of driving, with roots to the RX7 abundantly present throughout each nook and cranny. Boy, is it beautiful. While retaining a retro feel, Mazda has incorporated the new era of motoring, with an interesting two-rotor EV system. That's where it gets a tad disappointing. While yes, Mazda has reignited rotary power, the usage is simply to provide power regeneration to the electric powertrain. The Iconic SP produces 325bhp, and with a weight of less than 1.5 tons, it's sure to be a joy to drive.

The design is undoubtedly a perfect combination of future-thinking conventions and throwbacks to the RX range. Mazda has intended to produce a low centre of gravity, with a focus on a resultant car which is fun to drive at its core focus. It's wider, longer and lower than the MX5 model, and is guarrenteed to be a great car...but are the electric motors capable of producing the same emotion and soul as the SP's predecessors? Only time will tell.
