The Lotus Eletre is the brand new, fully electric, so called 'Hyper-SUV' that the British automotive company hope will enlarge the target audience and proceed into the future of electric automobiles. This newfound SUV is a Lotus like no other, in fact it is the first SUV the company has ever made. Following the trend of other competitive brands, such as the Lamborghini Urus and the upcoming Ferrari Purosangue, the Lotus Eletre features a very powerful motor. But it's not powered by the enormous gas guzzling V8 of something like the Urus, instead is fitted with a 600hp, 800 volt battery powering all four wheels. It has a large 400 kilometre range in a full battery, and will only take 20 minutes to charge when using a 350kW charger. However due to the heavy electric motor and system, it weighs in at almost 2,000kg, meaning the 600hp will be extremely sought after if it is to keep up with it's competitors.
The Eletre is innovative also, with intelligent driving technologies including the world's first deployable Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system in a production car. According to Lotus, "This is Lotus reinvented, the birth of a new icon into the Lotus stable.' So is this the new direction that Lotus will be sticking with? Only time will tell, but with the Evija (Lotus' 2,000 horsepower, all electric hyper-car) still on it's way, maybe there is still some hope in terms of the sleek, sporty design that Lotus have been known for until now.
The design is controversial. The front grill off similarities to the Lamborghini Urus, but instead using the headlights off of a GTA knockoff car. The rear is better, the singular taillight strip is classy and elegant. In my opinion, the whole rear 3 quarters of the Eletre are near perfect, however the front is where the problems begin to arise.
The interior is sophisticated and futuristic, creating sporty yet comfortable design. The light colour interior is gorgeous, and is made from an advanced wool-blend fabric, which is 50% lighter than regular leather. A humungous 15.1inch infotainment screen sits in the middle of two data clusters for both passenger and driver making the interior as intelligent as it is brilliant looking. The inspiration is taken from that of the Emira and Evija, which is actually not the only thing that is taken from these models. Lotus claims to have said to combine 'the heart and soul' of the Emira (the final combustion engine Lotus) and the Evija's powerful electric system.
Production is due to start later this year, with the first deliveries happening in 2023.
