Ferrari 550 Maranello

In this retro review, we discuss the modern-classic of the Ferrari 550M, which was produced in the turn of the millennia.

On a sunny day in 1996, crowds flocked to the Nürburgring to witness the unveiling of the Ferrari 550M. Partnered with the golden-era of F1, Ferrari put on a show, with Michael Schumacher, Nicki Lauda and Jody Schecker competing in a four-lap race demonstrating the immense capabilities of the new 550M.

Twenty-seven years later, and here we are. What sits in front of me is something truly gorgeous. A feat of engineering excellence that still looks as though it has just exited the production line. This is the Ferrari 550 Maranello, nearly thirty years on.

This fine example is specced in Argento Nürburgring; the name paying homage to that iconic reveal back in 1996. It's one hell of a spec, with red leather seats and calipers creating a classy contrast. On the outside, flowing lines and curves create an illusion of a liquid silver surface, with the paint having a slight blue hue. The 550 Maranello is instantly recognisable, with an elongated front hood, short and stubby rear, shark-like design and curved duck-tail. This is a car that revolves around smooth lines and ellipses. The rear, while simple, is timelessly designed. The four circular tail lights paired with dual twin exhaust exits are iconic to Ferrari, and have only been redesigned in recent times. Yes, the 550 Maranello's design is simple. To some it may even be bland. However when analysed and studied in person, it truly is one of the most beautiful Ferrari's ever made, especially when in such a classy spec such as this.

While the design of the 550M is spectacular, what's under the hood is just as notable. Sat nestled in the enormous front section is a 5.5L naturally aspirated V12. Producing 479hp, it's certainly nothing to be scoffed at. Of course, being a naturally aspirated V12, the exhaust note is the greatest feature. While riding in this particular 550M, the exhaust seemed to almost encompass me, being heard by the brain rather than just the ears. The sound flows through your veins, making you one with the car. The 6-speed gated manual gearbox controls your emotions, with downshifts sending an ecstatic feeling down the spine. It's the platform that formed the base for the F12 Berlinetta, 812 Superfast and 812 Competizione. Without the 550M, these tremendous supercars would simply not exist.

While gradually becoming a classic, the Ferrari 550M retains its place as one of the greatest GT road cars ever produced. With a breathtaking design, glorious engine and exhaust system, all while being the platform for modern staples, it certainly deserves the recognition.

This example we had the pleasure of reviewing is currently up for sale.
